The Purple Sock

A short film about where everything you lose goes — and who’s taken it. Screened at Gimli Film Festival.

The Purple Sock

Do you ever wonder where your missing glove went, or why that package of twenty pens slowly dwindles to one, the others all vanishing without a trace? In this short, a girl finally discovers the secret place where everything we lose goes.

The Challenge:

Finish a short film in two days for the Winnipeg Film Group's (WFG) 48 Hour Film Contest to win a screening at the Gimli Film Festival. It must fit a theme assigned by the WFG forty-eight hours before the deadline.

The Process:

I wrote a script with a flashback sequence that I thought we could plug the theme into, but when the theme, "quest," didn't fit our script at all, we had to start from scratch.

I stayed up until 6am thinking of an idea and writing a new script. We shuffled around the actors we already cast, started shooting at 9am, wrapped up at 7pm, edited all day Sunday, and submitted it to the WFG with minutes to spare.

The Results:

WFG selected the film for the Gimli Film Festival where it was screened as The Purple Sock. The lead, Shannon Loewen, was nominated for best actress

During another screening at the Metropolitan the crowd released a collective gasp at the film’s big reveal, which was very satisfying as a filmmaker.
